Yesterday...
I spent nine hours in the emergency room with my grandma. She had been sick all weekend with a stomachache, so Sunday morning when she was still in bed at 7am, I knew something was wrong. So I took her to the emergency room at 7:30. For some reason, the emergency room was filled with senior citizens! There are a million stereotypes that come to mind, but out of respect for my grandma, I shall refrain. Although, it was interesting to note that - thanks to hospital gowns - I could see that, yes, grannies really do wear 'granny underwear'.
Anyway, my grandma was put on an IV drip that made her a bit loopy, so I did my best to construct a pillow for her out of her shirt and to make sure she had a sheet over her. The awesome doctors were so negligent as to let her IV run out for an hour and let her heart monitor wail an alarm of malfunction. There weren't any rooms available, so we had to hang out in emergency for said nine hours. I told the nurse that my grandma was diabetic and she needed to eat. The nurse replied, "Well, she should have eaten before she came to the emergency room!" My jaw dropped and my brain bled from her stupidity. Ok, let's say I just cut off my arm. Better head to the emergency room... But wait! I might be there for a few hours and I'm diabetic, so I'd better go get a happy meal first. Needless to say, they call it an emergency for a reason. Idiots...
I hadn't gotten any sleep the previous night, so I fashioned a bed out of the two chairs in the room and tried to sleep. It didn't work, but you can't blame me for trying. I felt worse for my grandma. She felt horrible, but was on a stretcher for so long...I was relieved when she finally got a room. I hated seeing my grandma hooked up to all these tubes and monitors...
The doctors wouldn't tell us anything that was going on, but through the occasional nurse, we learned that something was wrong with her heart and that she was being admitted to the hospital. She's still there today. I don't think its anything serious, but she's my grandma. Those who know me know that we are extremely close. I couldn't sleep last night, knowing that she wasn't in her own bed. Hopefully she will come home tomorrow.
